GREENSBORO, NC – Dr. David H. Perrin, who is provost at UNCG, has been named to a three-year appointment on a national committee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Perrin will serve on the 21-member Advisory Committee on Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Linkages of the Human Resources and Services Administration, and will represent the allied health area.

The committee was created by Congress to review programs that support interdisciplinary, community-based training as part of the goals of the Health Resources and Services administration and the Bureau of Health Professions. It advises the Secretary of HHS and Congress on programs concerning Area Health Education Centers, Health Education Training Centers, and the Burdick Program for Rural Interdisciplinary Training, and programs in geriatrics, allied health, chiropractic, and podiatric medicine. The theme for this year’s 8th annual report is “Healthcare Workforce Issues in Rural America.”

He is completing his first year as provost at UNCG, after serving as dean of the School of Health & Human Performance from 2001 to July 1, 2007.

“This is a wonderful honor for David, who has done an excellent job in his first year as provost,” said Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan. “He is an academic professional and a leader in the applied research used extensively in athletic training, as well as health and wellness programs for a general population. He will do an excellent job in this advisory committee appointment.”

Perrin has an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals spanning almost 30 years. He has published six books and is editor of the Athletic Training Education Series. His work has been supported by grants from the NIH, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Athletic Trainers' Association Research and Education Foundation.

As provost, Perrin is UNCG’s chief academic officer and holds the joint position of vice chancellor for academic affairs. In that capacity, he provides leadership to academic programs that include 86 majors at the undergraduate level, 65 master’s degrees and doctorates in 25 areas.

Perrin came to UNCG in 2001 as dean of the School of HHP and professor of exercise and sport science. Under his leadership, a Center for Women’s Health and Wellness was established, and a new initiative for Healthy Aging and Living is being developed at the North Campus of the Gateway University Research Park. External grant and contract funding for the school has increased fivefold, from less than $500,000 to more than $3 million. Two new doctoral programs – the Doctor of Public Health and the PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders – were established in their respective departments. Diversity in the faculty and student populations increased to 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively.
