School of Education Presents 2008 Alumni Awards

GREENSBORO, NCThe School of Education has named its 2008 alumni award recipients.

Winners are:


Outstanding Achievement Award
Jeri Board ’86 of Tryon

Board, who earned a PhD in Educational Leadership at UNCG, recently won the North Carolina Society of Historians President’s Award for her novel “The Bed She Was Born In.”

Outstanding Achievement Award
Sally Smith ’79 of Greensboro

Smith, who earned an MA in Middle Grades Education from UNCG, won the 2007 Marcellus E. Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award from Wake Forest University.

Distinguished Career Award
Martha Carroll ’62 of Mount Airy

Carroll received a BA in Primary Education and an MA in Special Education from UNCG. She earned a PhD in Special Education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, and later joined the faculty of the University of Toledo as a professor of special education. She retired from her position in 1999, and is currently coordinator of the special education program at Siena Heights University.

Dot Kearns ’53 of High Point

Kearns received a BA in Sociology and an MA in Counseling from UNCG. She has worked as a social worker and teacher. She was elected to the High Point Board of Education and the Guilford County Board of Commissioners and has served on the Guilford County Board of Education since 1992.

Carolyn McKinney ’69 of Greensboro

McKinney received a BA in Early Childhood Education from UNCG. She spent over 25 years as an elementary classroom teacher with Guilford County Schools and with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. She is currently executive director of the N.C. Professional Teaching Standards Commission.

Barbara Parramore ’54 of Raleigh

Parramore earned a BA in Elementary Education from UNCG, an MA from N.C State and PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Duke. Parramore began her career with N.C. State as a part-time visiting assistant professor in guidance and personnel services, and was eventually promoted to full professor. She served as chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction from 1974 to 1985 and retired from N.C. State in 1996.

Distinguished Service Award
Celia Jolley ’71 of Williamsburg, Va.

Jolley earned a BA in Elementary Education from UNC, an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from N.C. State and administrative certification from East Carolina. She established the before and after school care program for grades K-6 in Franklin County Schools, and coordinated the cross-age tutorial reading program. She currently serves as chair of the UNCG Students First Campaign Committee and is a member of the UNCG Board of Visitors.

Distinguished Service Award
Marge Michel ’74 of Greensboro

Michel earned an MA in Education at UNCG. She taught for five years in the Iowa School for the Blind, and in 1974 founded an educational publishing company, The Education Center, with her husband, Jake. She served for four years as chair of the School of Education’s Students First Campaign, and in 2001 the Michel Family Foundation provided an endowment to establish the Teaching Resources Center, which students and professors use to learn about curricula and textbooks and to design lessons.
