GREENSBORO, N.C. – Darren K. Woods, general director of the renowned Fort Worth Opera, will speak about his experiences and challenges in raising the financial and artistic profile of the opera company.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Room 130 of the Moore Building at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The lecture is sponsored by the Entrepreneurial Innovation in the Arts initiative (EIA), part of the BELL (Building Entrepreneurial Learning for Life) Forums at UNCG.

Since his appointment in 2001, the Fort Worth Opera has increased subscription and donor bases and has received rave reviews for the quality of its productions.

In 2007, Woods radically changed the format of how the Fort Worth Opera presents its season, moving from single productions throughout the year to the newly created Fort Worth Opera Festival.

Woods is also the General and Artistic Director of the Seagle Music Colony in New York, the oldest vocal training program for young artists in the United States.

A frequent vocal competition judge, Woods has served as a panel judge for the Richard Tucker Foundation, the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and the Denver Opera Guild among others.

In addition, he has performed as a professional operatic tenor in such venues as the New York City Opera, Carnegie Hall and the Santa Fe Opera.

Begun in 2007, BELL initiatives are aimed at building entrepreneurial awareness and the application of entrepreneurial principles and resources for the transformation of academic units across campus. It is the cornerstone of UNCG’s response to the priorities and strategic directions that the UNCG Board of Governors has set for the university system in promoting economic development in the state that includes business, social, civic, cultural and academic pursuits.

Students may enroll in the BELL forums for credit. For more information contact Dr. John Lee Jellicorse at (336) 334-4069, or visit http://eia.uncg.edu.
