GREENSBORO, NC – Jim Fisher, head of the Department of Theatre, has co-authored a new book on theater history.
“The Historical Dictionary of American Theater: Modernism” covers the 50-year period from 1880 to 1929, one of the richest eras in the history of the American stage. With the gradual influx of European modernism beginning in the 1880’s, more traditional theatrical forms were eclipsed by futurism, symbolism, surrealism and expressionism.
The “Dictionary,” co-written with Felicia Hardison Londré of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, includes such theater icons as Eugene O’Neill, Phillip Barry, David Belasco, Florenz Ziegfeld, Maude Adams and George S. Kaufman. Entries also cover criticism, architecture, set design and costume design.
The 616-page reference volume contains a chronology and a bibliography. It is published by Scarecrow Press.
