Emily Vitrano and Chadwick Hubbard star in "The Shape of Things" by Neil LaBute.
UNCG Theatre will revive a favorite from its Summer Rep lineup, “The Shape of Things” by Neil LaBute, at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 and 8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20 in Brown Building Theatre.
This first play of the 2005-06 season follows the romantic transformation of Adam, a dorky university museum guard, as he shapes up for his latest love Evelyn, a graduate student in art. They meet as she is about to deface a statue in the museum where he works.
As time passes, Adam finds Evelyn’s attention and affection slowly transforming him into a different person much to the chagrin of his friends. Betrayal ensues when Adam must choose between his girlfriend and his friends.
The director, Peter Duffy, is an MFA student in theatre for youth. Emily Vitrano and Chad Hubbard, both senior BFA acting students at UNCG, play Evelyn and Adam. Ginny Lee and Brian O’Sullivan play Adam’s friends, Jenny and Phillip. Designers include: Kasendra Bell for scenery, Melissa Guyer for costumes and Laura Brignull for lighting.
“We all wonder about who we are within the context of relationships, and how we are changed because of them,” Duffy said. “The actors will deliver persuasive performances that will leave audiences questioning not only the character choices within the world of the play but their own choices in their lives.”
On the other hand, audiences can enjoy the funny dialogue written in a sassy, hip style.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for groups of 10 or more, and $5 for UNCG students with ID.
The play contains adult situations and content. Free parking for evening and weekend performances is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum. For more information call the Summer Rep Box Office at (336) 334-4392 or visit the department's web page.
