A mug bearing the image of university founder Charles D. McIver is among the items on display in an exhibition in Jackson Library.
The UNCG University Archives was established in 1942 on the 50th anniversary of the institution’s opening. Originally called the College Collection, it contains millions of items, including an Artifact Collection.
The Artifact Collection holds hundreds of items from throughout the university’s history donated by faculty and staff, students and alumni. An exhibit in the second floor lobby of Jackson Library showcases a selection of these artifacts through Jan. 6.
Hermann J. Trojanowski, assistant university archivist, organized the exhibit, which includes:
• A metal and rhinestone tiara used to crown the campus Queen on May Day, circa 1940;
• A commemorative plate depicting Administration Building (Foust Building). The 7” plate is blue glaze on white Old English Staffordshire Ware imported by Hugh J. Snavely of The Corner, circa 1955;
• A mug depicting Charles D. McIver, founder and first president of the State Normal and Industrial School (now UNCG) on one side and the Administration Building (now known as the Foust Building) on the other, not dated but probably offered by the Alumni Office during the 1940s or 1950s.
