He’s a political commentator, a radio personality, a talk show host and a journalist.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will host Tavis Smiley at 8 p.m. Sept. 10 in Aycock Auditorium to kick off the University Concert/Lecture Series.
He is the host of “Tavis Smiley” on PBS and “The Tavis Smiley Show,” formerly on National Public Radio. Smiley’s lecture is entitled “Advocacy: How to Fight for What You Believe and Make a Difference.”
Through his lectures, writings, broadcasts and his nonprofit foundation, Smiley has informed and inspired people, especially African Americans. Along the way, he has interviewed then-President Bill Clinton, Fidel Castro, Pope John Paul II and authored eight books.
Prior to hosting his show on NPR, Smiley produced and hosted the award-winning current affairs show “BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley” on Black Entertainment Television.
After graduating from Indiana University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in law and public policy, Smiley found his way to radio commentary as a platform for public debate. His first program, “The Smiley Report,” aired in 1991 in Los Angeles.
Since 1996 Smiley has commented on political and social issues twice a week for Tom Joyner’s national radio program. His other credits include serving as a correspondent for CNN and ABC.
DeWayne Wickham in USA Today declared Smiley “arguably the nation's most influential black journalist.”

Smiley’s lecture is the first of seven events in the 2005-06 UC/LS. Other events include: Oct. 22, Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band; Nov. 1, Lou Rawls; Jan. 21, actress-singer Betty Lynn Buckley; Feb. 12, the musical MAME; Feb. 24, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana dance troupe; and April 6, the modern dance company MOMIX performing “Passion.”
