The UNCG
chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will induct new members
on April 25.
Speaker for the event will be Dr.
Matt Cartmill of the Duke University Medical Center.
His lecture, titled “Evolution, Creation and
Eternity: What’s Wrong with the ‘Creation’
Part of ‘Creation Science,’” will
follow the 7 p.m. induction ceremony in the Alumni
House. The event is open to the public.
Phi Beta Kappa is
the oldest and most honored of all college honorary
societies. It was established in 1776 at the College
of William and Mary and there are only 270 chapters
nationally. UNCG is one of only six institutions in
North Carolina to have a chapter. Others are UNC-CH,
N.C. State University, Wake Forest University, Davidson
College and Duke University.
At the Duke Medical School, Cartmill is a professor
in the Department of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy.
He is a noted expert in the field of primate evolution
and locomotion. He is author of the book, “A
View to a Death in the Morning: Hunting and Nature
Through History,” which received the Howells
Award of the American Anthropological Association,
and the Marsh Book Award of the American Society for
Environmental History. He is co-author of the book,
“Human Structure,” past president of the
American Association of Physical Anthropologists,
and former editor-in-chief of the American Journal
of Physical Anthropology.
