Welcome to the African American Studies Program website!

Since 1982, the African American Studies program (AFS) has provided UNCG students with an opportunity to study the various historical and social experiences of people of African descent in America. As an interdisciplinary program, AFS majors and minors are required to take courses offered by many different departments, as well as ones offered by the program. Through AFS-sponsored programs such as the conversations series, panel discussions, and the annual conference (CACE), the program encourages stimulating intellectual “conversations” between faculty, students, and interested community members.

People with a background in African American Studies pursue careers in various areas, such as law, politics, medicine, teaching, entertainment, and journalism. I encourage you to become an AFS major or minor and/or to attend one of our AFS sponsored events.

Looking forward,

Tara T. Green, PhD
Director and Associate Professor
